Resolution? Or not?

29.12.06

I'm not traditionally a fan of new year's resolutions. I can never remember them after a month anyway, and even if I did, But for 2007, I have decided to give it a try. Starting the year on a positive note, will hopefully make it a more positive year. There's a whole list of things in my head that I would like to accomplish in the coming year.

I want...
to travel - somewhere other than KL
to learn something new
to apply myself more in the kitchen
to pass at least one of my exams

Four successful accomplishments would be good by my standards.

Christmas was pleasant and filling. Old school friends. Chocolates, candy, hotpot on a wintery christmas eve, turkey loaf, a huge leg of ham, christmas pudding, eggnog (my first time ever), cake and a whole lot of wine that I didn't drink.

What a year 2006 has been. A year with plenty of surprises, disappointments and some joy.

Who Moved My Cheese?

14.12.06

Stuart, our MD, made it compulsory for all staff this week to learn about cheese. Who Moved My Cheese? is an international bestseller about change, and adapting to change. Centering around 4 characters - 2 mice - Sniff and Scurry, and 2 little people - Hem and Haw (haha, don't laugh), the story is simple, almost childlike. The maze, the running shoes and the cheese are all meant to represent the different aspects in life.

A personality test type questionaire lets you identify the character you are most similar with. I came up as a Hem i.e. someone who fears change. In a way, I think that may be true. At the same time, I think I'm a little of a Haw as well i.e. someone who adapts to change in their own time/way and realises that it can be good.

I remain a sceptic though. I don't feel like I learnt anything about myself from this course that I didn't already know. Perhaps the aim of the course is to arouse consciousness more than anything. I've never fancied these sorts of motivational or self-development courses because I feel that most of the concepts are pretty common sense. And it is not easy or natural for me to take these concepts away and apply them to the real world. I struggle to even remember what the concepts are after a day or two.

Perhaps that's the Hem in me. I must aim to be more of a Haw :O

I thought my backyard was on fire yesterday! Crazy summer weather. Crazy smokey air. Feels like i'm back in Malaysia.

We need some rain. Or some hail. Better yet, some snow.
