La Mama

27.6.07

Thirsty for something different, an old friend and I decided to wander over to La Mama this evening to catch a production. I was surprised to discover this quaint little theatre, which I somehow never noticed before on the busy stretch of Faraday St directly opposite Brunettis. The theatre is small and cosy and barely seats 30 people. There is nothing grand or impressive about it, yet it reminded me of the bak kut teh places back home somehow. Tickets are cheap (only $10), the fireplace keeps one warm in the cold of winter, and free drinks were served. By drinks I mean a strong concoction of ginger something or rather, water and coffee at the end.

I was part of the cast of 9000 seconds...Why? [because] tonight. In fact, everyone of the audience were. I got to play the role of a girl, praying. Reaching out to God or something. I am still not sure. I can't say much about the production, other than STRANGE! This was the strangest piece of art / form of expression that I have ever experienced. Not only was it strange, it was that strange that it just went right over my head. I didn't get it! not one bit of it! I thought, OK, maybe I'm not artsy fartsy enough. My friend didn't get it either, and mind you he is one of those rather unique artsy type people. Very, very strange.

In other news, the weekend past was a weekend of celebrations. Birthdays, more birthdays, and an engagement. T'was a happy weekend indeed! And to the newly engaged, my heartiest congratulations. I'm so excited!

I am now officially $1700 poorer. But with that, hopefully an experience richer. Not long to go now!

The wrong kind of wisdom

19.6.07

"They almost never cause a problem", the dentist says cheerfully as I tell him about my recent wisdom tooth growth. Bastard. True to form, mine are causing me problems.
The dentist says that I will have to have them extracted, SURGICALLY extracted. I have made my appointment for the 30th to have 2 of my useless molars extracted. Not looking forward to it at all.

Don't be such a wuss, I tell myself. But I can't help it. The thought of my gums being cut open and something being yanked out of my mouth is amazingly unappealing. I hear it can get pretty violent! And even though it will be done under anaesthetic, even the thought of being injected is pretty *urgh*.

Why? Why? WHY do we even have these silly teeth when all they do is cause pain and misery? Apparently our mouths have shrunk from our predecessors. Hence the lack of space for the extra teeth. But I've already taken out 2 teeth to get my braces on last time. There should be PLENTY of space for everyone!

I'm getting my mouth x-rayed tomorrow. Crossing my fingers that I only need to remove the two on the left. Looking forward to being a goldfish in a couple of weeks now!

and they say Melbourne's weather sucks...

10.6.07

Good to be back home. And even though it's cold as... I won't complain. Nothing can be worse than the weekend of continuous rain in Sydney. The rain just kept pouring and pouring, from 9am on Friday morning till late Saturday night. Which meant I spent the weekend in Sydney, indoors. *bleh*

Well, at least I got to spend some time with family the adorable kids. Babysitting, sorta... or rather entertaining the 2 yr old Daniel. We played Eye-Sports all Saturday afternoon - sorta like the Wii, except there's a camera which detects your movements and you jump around with the game. I sorta just waved my hands around coz that works too. And the lovely Sara, who's just 6 months, and constantly smiling and who's just learnt how to blow raspberries. Nevermind the constant spurts of saliva, she's so cute.

To anyone who's heading over to Sydney soon, I must recommend you stay at the Establishment Hotel. It's a warehouse turned boutique hotel off George St. and it's great. Everything you need's there - a bar, a lounge (with some pretty hot waitresses) a restaurant, and the room's are pretty impressive too.

Well then, back to the long weekend.

all by my lonesomeness

5.6.07

Yup, that's me as of today. So far, day 1 has been pretty OK, given I've been busy running around organising documents and what not.

It's been a while since I've been on my own. I will have to start learning to be self-sufficient again for the next few months. I made a good start today - dismantling the smoke detector in the unit.

Why? you may ask. Because the silly thing would not stop beeping, or "chirping" as the manual calls it. *Chirp*chirp* all night long - not 1, but 2 of them. Believe me, it was not music to the ears.

OK - so maybe dismantling the smoke detector isn't such a hard thing to do. But tell that to someone who is vertically challenged, with hardly any strength. It took me a whole half hour - dragging the dining table across the apartment (because I was still too short on the chair!), worrying about falling and breaking my neck with no one to rescue me, all the while with the stupid chirping in my face. Anyway, I did it! The next challenge is to re-install it again tomorrow.

Well anyway, looking forward to the long weekend. Looking forward to a short stint in Sydney this weekend. Looking forward to meeting my baby niece Sara. It's nice to have things to look forward to when you're by your lonesome.
